Description

"Perhaps the truth depends on a walk around the lake." --Wallace Stevens

This is a scenic shot looking north towards old town St. Augustine over Maria Sanchez Lake. It was taken during a morning bike ride with Lisa. She probably would have preferred if I had left the camera in the room, but was a good sport about my frequent stops. In the distance over the treetops you can see parts of Flagler college, the former Ponce de Leon hotel. The lake was once a creek but a weir was installed to create the thin lake. That weir is now rusted shut in the closed position and is a flooding hazard when St. Augustine experiences heavy rains. The lake is thought to be named after a fort near the area that was destroyed by a powder magazine explosion sometime after 1860. There is even a short play set bedside the lake named Fish Kill on Maria Sanchez I considered cropping out the bottom portion of the water to just below the palms on the left for a panoramic look, but I like the peaceful mood the full scene creates, and the postcard-like quality. ----- You can get an aerial view of the city HERE. Maria Sanchez Lake is at the bottom and I took the photo from the bottom (south) left corner of the lake from South Street. ----- Thanks for stopping by and for your fortified comments on yesterday's photo, Fort Mantanzas.
