Description
As children, I'll bet most of us played marbles... allies as they were commonly called here in Canada... regardless of what country we called home. There was nothing quite like dipping your hands into a bag of mixed marbles... catseyes, smokies, bonkers, and pearies to name a few. I was always partial to the cobalt blue catseyes... but I have to admit there were some smokies that I coveted from afar. Beautiful, creamy swirls of jade and magenta peeking out of vanilla smoke... some of it translucent... the rest opague... all of it exotic and exciting.
If you set up a bonker... those huge glass marbles that boasted twirls of spiralling colors deep within a clear glass orb... like fingernail parings that were painted red, green, gold, blue and purple... you would accept no less than five hits with a regular marble... only waffling on the deal if someone rolled in one of their most precious pearies or catseyes... then you'd have to concede that only two hits were necessary before you would reluctantly hand over that hefty, chipped, world class bonker. But... then your marble bag would then be so much richer... though lighter.
Ah... the memories... :) Here's to marbles everywhere... and to fall... to oak leaves that play marbles at midnight. And to all of you... with thanks and hugs for taking the time to stop in for a peek. Thank you for the thoughts and words you've left on my previous uploads! Hugs... Helen :)

Helen: Only a person who played these games could come up with the ideas of swirls and inner magic of colour and shape. This is true art at its most breathtaking beauty. By the way, I played but collected the bets!!

I collected, and still have, various marbles but never really played them. Growing up in New York City in the ..er, early '50's, we played a similar game called Scully. Not to be confused with the agent on the X Files, it was played with bottle caps of various sizes that were filled with the wax of melted crayons to add stability and weight to them. Didn't look anything like this though, I bet these marbles never saw the ground!

Your descriptive narrative evokes some wonderful memories, Helen. John still has a couple of shoeboxes of assorted and beautiful marbles..from the late 50's and early 60's. And Here's to you, dear lady: creator of magic and elegance, of incredible beauty. So rich and gorgeous and excellent!

Helen, Such a beautiful and breathtaking image! And the memories your writing evokes! I was the only girl that played marbles with the boys at our school. I never understood why. My three brothers and I played marbles at home too, so I was quite good. We had these wonderful large marbles called 'aggies'. They were highly prized! (If memory serves me correctly, they were made from agate). Everyone coveted them, and no one wanted to lose theirs. I had completely forgotten about 'steelies' until reading Richard's comment! How wonderful your art is, and you have such a gift for writing of memories from the heart, and blessing us all with them. Thank you once again! Leanndra
