Description

Buy content. Add content to scene. Turn render settings way up. Upload picture. At what point does a Poser image cease to be Human Lego and become art? This is quite definitely the former, yet I think it still looks pretty good, even if all of the "pretty good" is courtesy of other people. Even the backdrop is just one of the Portrait Paper backdrops for the DAZ Cyclorama. I think my only actual contribution was to conform the various items. This, of course, I did with MorphConform, a little script that works, with results of varying quality, in P6, and can be found in My Free Stuff. So even my own contribution was downloaded from Renderosity.

A photo becomes art when the photographer took it with the aim of creating art. Specifying pose and controlling composition for the purpose of improving the result (beyond "OK, everybody squeeze in, Auntie Marge move along at the back there so we can fit your full width in the image") is art. Choosing the exposure or the type of film with the aim of creating a specific result is art. Which doesn't rule out accidental art, I'll admit. However, there was nothing accidental about the above image. I was just doing a test render. I do find the results pleasing - the contrast between the nicely imperfect Clara skin and the lovely gloss on the texture used on the clothing - but I still maintain it isn't art. When I set out to create art, it's art, even if it's sucky art. When I set out to create a test render, it's not art, even if the result is pleasing to the eye. Is art in the eye of the beholder? Or in the intention of the creator? Deep and meaningful answers to...
