Description

In the fringe of the Amu-Darya river, Khiva was an old settlement whose age is not known. The trading post of the silk route was situated in Khiva in the 8th century. The area was repeatedly ravaged by Genghis Khan and later by Timur. In the 16th century the Uzbek Shaybanids formed the state of Khorezm and made Khiva its capital. The city prospered as a khanate under various Khans until conquered and annexed by the Russians in 1873. In 1991 Uzbekistan became an independent country.
