Description

Watercolour on canvas - 45 x 45 cm 1st-3rd October 2005 Believe it or not, this is the first time in my entire life that I've worked on canvas! Perhaps a somewhat unorthodox medium to use with it too, watercolours - but as Cassie has proved many times, it gives watercolours an unusual flexibility in that previously laid down layers can always be reworked and remixed in a way that's impossible with paper. I'm still using chance elements a lot - the shape of this creature came about by loosely laying down pieces of hessian string over a wash of water, soaking them in and adding strong brown pigment over them. Once dried, the resulting forms are very pleasing, and can if you wish be used as inspiration for developing further. Thanks to Cassie for so much education here! My developing of these forms was quite haphazard as I hadn't used watercolours for at least a decade, and never on canvas. Very much a learning process and early on the results of what I added looked just awful, but by afterwards wiping and smearing away a lot of what I'd done (and also using watercolour pencils) a new direction was achieved which made me feel it could be saved, encouraging me to push on and complete the piece. The result is pretty flawed but I'm quite happy with it as a first attempt! It's been a good education so far and sometime I'll use these techniques again. Thank you for taking a look and your feedback is always appreciated :-)

Attractive layers of browns and rust. I think the figure evolves by itself. I do not want to look for it. I know it is there and it is striking. Your creative spirits have found an rxcellent medium of expression. Well done!

Flawed? Can't see anything wrong with this! Impressive, strong composition, delicate textures, and some neat rendering. Interestingly it seems to be rather Cassie-esque, maybe because of the earthy colours and materials used? Anyway you have a great teacher, so how can you fail?!

This is incredibly three dimensional for water colour Jim, the painting almost seems to lift off the canvas! Love those flowing lines & forms, the range of colour & tone & that touch of texture, all makes for a really engaging composition. Keep at it I want to see more! ; )

OK, who the hell are you and what have you done with synapse? I see no odd photoshop squarey things or funky lighing effects. What I see is natural mediums, intelligible shading . . . and also some straight up photographs. Never thought you had it in you man. Nice to see you around again.

Canvas and watercolour pencils are fantastic together ar'nt they, as you say you can treat the canvas so much harder then paper, you should keep it up it looks great.
