Description
Monofliers are such a familiar part of the cityscapes of the galaxy today that their absence from the cities of the lawless fringe may seem surprising, but it's easily explained. Meet Emma Langholm, leader of the most powerful of the Syndicates that effectively ruled Pharos Five, better known by her nickname of "Raygun Rita", for her hands-on approach to settling disputes. Langholm's syndicate was less a gang than a private army, with an interstellar reach. When the Pegasus Corporation wanted to launch the first Monoflier model in the Pharos system, getting her endorsement was vital. This promo from the time shows Langholm and one of her lieutenants in a characteristically persuasive frame of mind, supposedly having flown in by Monofliers. Suddenly, the Pegasus Monoflier became the vehicle of choice for leading members of the Syndicates. The one exception was Langholm's own. She forbade her followers from using them and, in a brilliantly planned, ruthlessly executed set of ambushes, "Raygun Rita" literally shot her rivals out of the sky. The Monoflier disappeared from the Pharos Five skies as abruptly as it had appeared. In its haste to leave the planet, the badly rattled Pegasus Corporation was forced to sell its assets to Langholm for a fraction of their value. "Monofliers? I swear by 'em," she would joke later.
