Description

First of all, I want to thank everyone who commented on my last photo "Scary, isn't it" and thought I should do a follow-up and a brief explanation. I was a bit rushed for time and really didn't go into very much detail. Back in the 1930's the State of Connecticut appropriated a vast tract of land to build a huge residential facility as a training school for developmentally disabled persons. There are now over 40 brick buildings(called cottages) that are home to over 500 residents. Many old houses had to be torn down or relocated during its construction but this pre-existing cemetery was left untouched. There are people who have worked there for years and still don't even know it's location. Since I am responsible for the medical concerns of these residents (approx.500) on nights, I get to drive all over the grounds so I now know just about every square inch of this place. Actually, photo opportunities abound here, Georgian architecture, cow barns, chicken coops, apple orchards , gardens, a small lake, babbling brooks, white tail deer, Canada geese, raccoons, skunks, wild turkeys, foxes, coyotes, all set in the beautiful Connecticut countryside. My tabby cat was even born out here. Currently there is a lot of pressure to close this "institution" and mainstream everyone into the community, I have mixed feeling about that. I now only work there on a "per diem" basis and am far removed from the bureaucratic bull crap that still is, and will always be, a big part of any government agency. Time to jump off my soapbox. Thanks for letting me vent a bit. Perhaps I'll take you on a photographic tour, no people pics though, not allowed. Just got a call to go into work again tonight. Seems like nobody wants to drive around in this nasty, rainy weather . Hey, I'm not made of sugar, I won't melt, and I just may buy myself a macro lens with the extra $$$$. ;o )

things like this is always a mystery about who the people were and what they made of their lifes. here locally a cemetary with 1700 graves more or less was covered by a street and forgotten for many years on purpose until a new project on the interesecting highway was undertaken. they finally made a memorial to these people who was former slaves and poor people. I drove down the street many times without every thinking about it.I hope they do not do away with your job.

Thanks for that follow-up info! Our culture has some really screwy ideas about death and the dead so it is always interesting to hear stories like these.

You have captured my heart with this photo. I am so fascinated by old graveyards. I am so at peace in places like this. Strange to some, wonderful and interesting to me. I would like to learn how to do rubbings from some of those old stones.

Wow, quite a history here! Thank you for sharing this piece of Connecticut life (and after that...)! I can imagine your mixed feelings. Fortunately you know how to keep away from all the bureaucratic blah blah! Impressive work, would be great to stroll around here!
