I have always liked 'llIustration' and tend to produce it either as Cover Art or Sequential imagery. The former is probably the more challenging because of the balance that needs to be struck between form and content, decoration and narrative. Cover Art, like the short story, gets a limited shot at indicating what lies beneath the cover. My current preoccupation has been described, and I think aptly, as 'nostalgic sci fi and pulp'. And someone also suggested that it might be a little too late to revive the 'adventure genre'.
Stylistically, I'm keen on the commercial illustration of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publication (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics). There is so much creativity and artistic competence to found on the covers and within the pages of even the most mundane examples.
It is over the last 7 years that I have started to use, and like, digital media. My working methods are still a little too intuitive and involve the usual squinting and standing back that one associates with traditional media, but I am enjoying making imagery more than ever and would now like to explore the possibilities of illustrating written stories (preferably by working with an author).
Interests: Commercial illustration and sequential imagery of the mid 20th Century that was made to promote 'mass' publications (especially children's annuals, pulp magazines and comics).

I'll only say that cruelty is NOT part of the spanish (from Spain, Europe) character.

LOL!! You've really pushed a button of mine this time! I don't know why I love surrealism but the mixture of old and new always makes me smile. Reminds me of a drawing that I did in high school that I was considering giving a rebirth in Poser. Really admire your color work and the text tie-in.

Re: zarquen's comment. I thought twice about including it but it was meant to make the parody of Boy's Adventure Annuals stories that much moremore authentic. Those that were published over many generations in the UK (formerely 'Great Britain'!!!) always showed some kind of antipathy towards the 'Spanish'. It was just the kind of comment you would find in stories within these annuals. Historical figures, like Franics Drake, are even today still presented as national heroes - even though his role, along with other so called 'privateers', in plundering the commericial plunder of the former Spanish empire, in order to kick start the English economy and subsequent British empire, is well documented (but not so well known). I am sorry if this comment caused any offence, but as you can see it was not meant to. I lived and worked in Spain for a short period (where incidently Sir Francis Drake is represented as a 'pirate') and experienced cordiality and respect. To this day it remains quite a special time in my life. PS. My sense of parody remains: "a burlesque and satirical imitation, which seems to be a mockery".

Cool concept. Great execution as always! I guess this image and story contain more irony than I could grasp at first sight ;) I found it fascinating that zarquen, reading a story involving characters like "Cuthbertson" and "Oliver" travelling on board of the "swallow", felt obliged that "cruelty is not part of the Spanish character". Which shows that he understood immediately to what kind of historical occurrences this alludes ;) I admire your friendly and self-restrained reply. And I wonder what the school children in Spain are taught. Those 4 million Tainos who perished under Columbus's short tenure as "Vice Roy" - couldn't they stand the candy he was handing out to them or what was it...? ;)
