I have found that animating hydrulics that have to pivot while allowin the piston to slide in and out while remaining parallel. It helps if you take care of most of it in modeler. It is a pain because you have to basically set up all the pieces in Layout and parent them together. But if you model your pivot point objects like pins, cylinders and such on the 0,0,0 coordinates, or have 0,0,0 fall on the pivot point of the object then you can more easily assign thos parts as targets for related moving parts. Like the main cylinders for the main supporting arm. You make the target for these the pins that anchor the pistons at the top. When now when evey you move the main arm the cylinders will allways point at the pins anchoring the piston. And if the pivot point of the cylinders is at the base anchoring pin of the cylinders then they will remain parallel to the piston and move as they should. This eliminates one set of objects that have to be hadn animated. The same can be applied to the pistons. but in reverse thier targets can be the base pins of the Cylinders at the base. Hope this helps, ( I am refering to the target entry in the motion options panel for the object)
