Description

Here is a cute california sea lion that I took last week..!! I liked how he was carefully relaxing on his side with flipper up basking in the sun they are sooo CUTE!!...The sun was hitting him just right!! We have some problems in Southern Califorina with them taking over.. heres a little information on the matter!!.. California sea lions have moved into the harbor at Newport Beach, squatting on people's boats and making a mess and a lot of noise. Some boaters have tied plastic bags to their boats in hopes of scaring them off. Others have erected barriers. But they don't always work. Recently, more than a dozen sea lions, which can each weigh as much as 800 pounds, took over one vintage sailboat and sank it. "They also can be dangerous as well," said Sgt. John Whitman of the Harbor Patrol. "There have been attacks up and down the coastline with surfers." So why not run the animals off? The California sea lion is legally untouchable because it was once hunted almost to extinction. But there are now as many as 400,000 California sea lions. All are protected by the 1972 Marine Mammal Act, which makes it illegal to kill, injure, or harass the creatures. It's why sea lions have happily lived at San Francisco's Pier 39 and why they have taken over an area off the central coast of Monterey. With sea lions settling in Southern California, residents are urging officials to use water hoses, dart guns, anything to evict the noisy bulls. "We're actively looking at non-lethal deterrent measures to exclude these animals from habitats like marinas," said DeAngelis with NOAA. What to do they are so cute but taking over !! i saw many pictures of them taking over boats and ruining them.. still , i like them better than the boats they are cuter .,..!! love to you all..! big hugs! ♥ Kimmers!

Awesome capture and the light is truly perfect and works wonders with the water! I'm just glad they are protected as that will at least buy the authorities some time to figure out what to do so that everyone is happy! I doubt squirting them with a hose will do anything, though! LOL! Perhaps they can relocate the boat owners to a little island in the Pacific so they can hang out with us on the coast! Excellent work!

real cute. as for the law. they change laws all the time. Time for a legl hunt like the aligator here in Louisiana. They was almost wipe out too but they back and you can hunt them for a few days out of the year. Cost a lot of money to do this. But it help on the pop. of them before they get to be like these sea lions; a pest. [Gators can kill you; guess a sea lion can too]

I can imagine the owner telling his insurance, well sea lions sank my boat. they reply, well did you save an oar? because you need one up the the creek. cute capture and they are a pleasure to see as a visitor there but would not want to hear their noise on a regular basis

Actually the boats have taken over their property and we have to see it that way. The same as the deer in your yard, we're really living in the deer's yard... Excellent image of these intelligent creatures!!!!!

What a darling photo - I adore these wonderful creatures - I've seen them in Monterey. It isad they are taking over because if it comes to a fight between man and animal - well, we know who will ultimately win. CC

I don't know what to say... Except that the idea of a sea lion attacking a surfer really made me smile... That kind of joke is not really funny. Actually, it's always the same, people who complain about the presence of wild life, people who have their usual comfort threatened by nature are ready to invent any kind of bullshits to protect their property... A sea lion attacking a surfer!!! What a silly joke! You say they are just 400,000 on Californian coasts! How many polluting bipeds do you have exactly, between LA and Cisco?? Hmmm, how many millions? Believe me, I've seen Californian coasts and I can tell you that Sea lions are not the main nuisance there! You made a splendid shot!
