Description

The first time we came into Chesterfield from this direction where we live today, Robin asked me to look out for something at the horizon. And when we began to drive downhill towards the first red lights I saw the spire of St Mary & All Saints Parish Church. This is a poor image of the spire itself - you can see it by the horizon - but it was the best I could do from the location where we were yesterday. The whole thing is a construction failure a long time ago. There is a lack of cross-bracing in the 8 sides of the structure, and remind us of the weight of those lead tiles which cover the wooden spire - all 32 tons of them. It have crooked and twisted the spire with time and I believe it still does. Legend tells of a powerful magician who persuaded a Bolsover blacksmith to shoe the Devil. The blacksmith, however drove a nail into the Devil's foot. Howling with rage, the Devil took flight towards Chesterfield. Skimming over the Church, he lashed out in agony, caught the spire and twisted it out of shape. And that's only one of the legends around this spire. Beautiful composition and lighting. The green-gray overtones are perfect to illustrate the legend. Wonderful shot.
