Description

Whanau Whanau (pronounced 'Far-now' or 'Far-no' depending on which island you're from) is a Maori word meaning 'Family'. This means a little more than the usual Mom, Dad and 2.5 kids as Maori people have an extended family structure that blurs the lines between family and tribe. It includes everyone with links to a particular Waka or ancestral canoe which bought the original Maori settlers to New Zealand 800 to 1000 years ago. This symbol means 'Whanau' and is used as a tattoo and as a carving motif and symbolises the interconnectedness of tribal family life. It is often carved from Pounamu or Greenstone (a type of jade considered sacred). The Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud - which inspired my choice of background image and the gulls represent NZ's connection with the sea. Everything modelled and rendered with trueSpace 5.1 I hope you like it - please let me know what you think Arohanui Stephen

Very nice image, Stephen. I like the colors and the peaceful atmosphere. I also like the material of the symbol and how the seagulls are reflected in it. :)

This is both beautiful and informative. The symbol is really (oh man I hate using this word) Cool! :) I know many who would go for it as a tatoo. Plus scenery like the background and even in the reflections in the Whanau make for an excellent image. Good job, well done!

Fantastic, and a history lesson too! That is a cool looking symbol - doesn't look like it was very easy to make! I love how you got it to reflect surroundings, really nice effect!

As far as I can remember ther are 29 ways of using and spelling the word "good" in Scots Gaelic and as I don't know you as a warrior "saio" then I shall just use "gasda clachair" good builder (oh but it meens so much more). English is so ristrictive, binding, blind, without vision in to the spiritual, course, rough, thoughtless, stupid....."gach"
