Cannons roared! Flame and earth was thrown into the air! There was the whinny of horses dying...then a call for silence. A man rode in on a gelding and handed a boy on a bicycle riding near the canal a golden thimble to put on his finger when he shoved it in the dyke next time. Hans, Glucken! he called as he rode off.
