Description

The blue engine in the centre of this picture is the so called 1100 series of the Dutch Railways. It was bought from the Alsthom factories in France and the series as a whole started with their career in 1951. The 1122 was one of the last engines of the 1100 series that was on duty. In 1999 it was all over with the 1100 series. This 1122 (of the Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht) is repainted in the original French color scheme. Back in 1951, all 1100's had to be repainted short after they arrived in Holland. The beautiful turquoise was no competition for Dutch weather and dirt.. they always looked filthy. But with a new dark blue color this problem was solved. Later on they were again repainted in grey and yellow this time and they stayed so till they were removed from the Dutch railways.
