Actually in the studio model in series and the others that have been made, Vipers are launched from the side and land from the rear.

While I am aware of that fact, Stevew, the show remains showing the "option" of shuttles and Vipers landing from a forward position on the landing nacelle. Matter of fact, all the shuttles DID launch through the front end. So did the Terran shuttle, and warship they ran into in the series.
