Any new recruit to the StarMarines soon gets to see the inside of the Torus, the 'Marines' paramount training system. In its simplest form, the Torus gets soldiers used to the idea of having enemies behind them, as well as in front. Yet it is far more sophisticated than that. A single officer can vary the geometry in a virtually infinite number of ways, throwing a constant stream of challenges in the path of the trainee soldiers inside. And the Torus itself can interface with the girls' telepathic implants, inducing suspicion, fear and confusion among the unwary.
