Description

Great spotted woodpecker Dendrocopus major Great spotted woodpeckers are black and white with vivid red under the tail. Males have a red patch on the nape of their neck: females do not. Juvenile birds have red crowns. They are the commonest British woodpeckers and can be seen throughout Britain, except the far north of Scotland, but, like other woodpeckers, they are absent from Ireland.
