Description
How many times can a man go to the well before it runs dry? I have often taped Akemi's (aka Nongo) knowledge of island birds for many of the birds that I capture in my yard. She has always come through for me identifying each and everyone so far. I gotta send this dedi out to her for all her help in identifying alot of the images of the birds I have posted this year. Many thanks Akemi for your time and effort for us mentally challenged bird photographers.
I got one shot of this guy before he was gone into the bush. This is the first time I saw this bird in my yard, and I'm glad it gave me a shot at it. Here it sits on one of my driveway posts. Here are some facts on this bird:
The Hwamei is a medium-sized gray-brown laughingthrush, about 24 cm long. The upperparts are olive grayish-brown; the buff crown and nape are heavily streaked with dark brown; these streaks continue onto the mantle. The flight feathers are dark brown with a chestnut wash. The tail is dark brown with olive bars; the base of the tail is olive. The underparts, from throat to breast, are yellowish-brown, with fine dark brown streaks. The belly is grayish, and unstreaked.
The vocalization of the male is a melodious, varied, lengthy whistled song. Hwamei live in pairs in dense brushy lowland. They are active in understory scrub. The males are highly territorial. These shy birds of the underbrush travel mainly in pairs. They feed
primarily on insects and fruit. The nest is usually built in a low shrub; three
to four glossy blue eggs are laid. Breeding season is not well documented in Hawaii.
Hwamei (or Huamei) is sometimes called Melodious Laughingthrush or Chinese Thrush. The Chinese word
