Description

Astounding Stories was a seminal science fiction magazine founded in 1930. Following 8 years of publication under two different editors, the magazine's helm was assumed by John W. Campbell, who took over in 1937. Campbell retitled it Astounding Science-Fiction and brought an unprecedented insistence on placing equal emphasis on both words of "science fiction." No longer satisfied with gadgetry and action alone, Campbell demanded that his writers think out how science and technology might really develop in the future - and, most important, how those changes would affect the lives of human beings. Robert Sheckley passed away on the morning of December 9, 2005 in Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY. At his funeral, his son Jason read Sheckley's melancholy short story "Beside Still Waters" (first published on Astounding in November 1953), about a man and his robot who grow old together. This fake ASTOUNDING cover, is my tribute to Robert Sheckley, one of the masters of Science Fiction, who was among the first to fuse satire with science fiction, creating a sub-genre called "galactic humor". The ROBOT, posable in Bryce, is on sale at my Renderosity shop, as other Sci-Fi Space Age related products. Comments and rates are welcome as always! :)

You nailed the late 1940s - early 1950s look to the covers of Astounding and others -- Dick

God, I did not know Sheckley was gone... It was one of the most provocative sf writers I knew in my youth ! To me a lot underestimated too, your cover render him justice, a beautiful image, and contest for it. Bravo !
