Description

A tribute to the Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski 1929-2005 Beksinski is one of my favourite artists, who left behind him a vast wealth of extraordinary works, particularly his so-called fantastic realism period which he worked in during the 1970s and 1980s (and which is arguably the most popular phase of his art). Some of his paintings and drawings depict nothing more than distorted heads in a unique style, and for a few weeks I'd had the idea of paying homage to him this way using the materials I've been working with since coming to Australia. I began this canvas this afternoon, 29th December 2005. The head is in profile, looking to the left, and has a very long nose. It also appears to be wearing a hat! 45cm x 45cm canvas, torn bedsheet, twigs and pieces of wood, modelling paste, white impasto acrylic I definitely intend to colour this one, but wanted to keep an image of it in its white form. Thank you as always for viewing and for your much valued feedback :-)

All I could see was a relief map of a peninsular until you pointed the head out! This extreme sort of caricature is another fascinating direction to explore. I'm still fond of my map interpretation though, specially if you colour it in earth and sea colours!

It reminds me on gothic Christ's head sculpture or Don Quijote. Great work.

A strong character piece. I very much agree with Luka 30 about the possible figures represented. I will look forward to seeing the color version as well. Excellent artwork. V
