The dazzling eighteen century Organ (built around 1733)
in the Saint Michael's Manueline Chapel
at the University of Coimbra !
Why on earth did someone start putting organ pipes horizontally instead of the tried and true upright position?
Aesthetics?
Or perhaps there is a more mundane reason . . .
Flies and air-born sand and dust were a problem to organ builders

Azulejos on the ceiling...? We don't use to... on the wall yes! But ceilings use to be painted. I don't know this one for real, we have so many churchs...!!! But I believe you enjoyed!!

Grrrrrrrrrrr j'arrive jamais t'rire en premier... lol ! Magnifiques ces dails. J'aime beaucoup les orgues... si seulement on pouvait avoir le son en plus de l'image !!!! Tr rococo ce style, j'avais oubliqu'au Portugal on en voyait beaucoup partout. Par contre, je suis aussi surprise des Azulejos au plafond, moins que ce ne soit du stuck ou quelque chose de ce genre peint ? Coimbra est un endroit extraordinaire, et il y a plein de sites sublimes douvrir. Ca me fait drement plaisir de revoir le Portugal et de douvrir tes photos Michel ! Bonne journ et gros gros bisous.

The organ and the azulejos at Saint Michael's Manueline Chapel are glorious to be sure, and you've done a remarkable job in both the photography and presentation of them here Michel. Very nice!

Well, I think Fernando (unike) is right... I love azulejos and I see them everywhere... but in this case I guess it's just a (beautiful) painted ceiling ! :~)
