Description

This bridge spans one of the fastest tidal races in Europe. It marks the North Western boundaries of Imperial Rome whose forces bridged the Rhine in the space of a week. The site where I stood to take this shot has been of strategic importance for over 2000 years, and up until Isumbard K Brunel built his steel rail bridge, the water was commonly crossed by ferry boat. If you read Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Kidnapped' you read about crossing the River Forth at Queensferry. That's where I was. The tidal flats are treacherous, and the high bridge sways and bounces in high winds. Maybe if the Roman Legions had this bridge history would have taken a different course.

Maybe I should point out that this is a view of the Forth Road Bridge: Opened on the 4th of September 1964 the bridge connected North and South Queensferry replacing the regular ferry service that had stood for 800 years. Work began on the approach roads for the bridge in 1958, with the bridge being nicknamed the Highway in the Sky. At the time the bridge was Europes longest suspension bridge at one and a half miles long. The bridge has four lanes of traffic, twin cycle paths and footpaths all being observed by 24 hour a day Close Circuit Television (A common occurrence now but Hi-tech for the time). Seven thousand feet of cable keep the bridge in place allowing for a twenty five foot swing for weather expansion. ..and you can see it swing!
