Frankly, I have no idea what this thing is... but it looked cool. So who says you can't get good depth of field with a stock lense? :)

just going on the little i can see, it looks to me like a variety of ginger. i have two different types of ginger plant here, and neither are the edible one. one has the flower pod on the leaf stalk and looks very much like these, there other produces a seperate stalk just for its flower pods. both have leaves just like those shown here

I think (key word is think) it is called a pine cone ginger. I have some in my yard and that is what I have heard them called. I think this is a beautiful shot of it.
