Looks like it might be cypress tree "knees" I have a shot of some in my gallery. Beautiful capture of them.

This is such a bizarre image. Almost unearthly, with it's combination of surface details and reflections, balanced against the sub-surface elements. I'm glad you've added a comment, since nothing in your notes for the image would have helped me figure out what it is I was looking at. That would have driven me crazy!
