I'm gonna go with some sort of rubber matt? The cob webs give a hint of scale (Large?) and the surface looks very rubbery, yet there is a very organic quality too..excellent puzzle Richard!!

Oh geeze I hope you are going to clue us in! I can see spiderwebs in some of the holes. I am thinking one of those faux terra cotta pots made from foam, they start to deteriorate in the weather. Really super macro!

Probably just human skin way close up--of course I TOO (like Kansas said ) thought it was a pizza like surface...the outer core of the planet 'Pepperonion' explored only by people wearing red and white checkered tablecloths.
