Description

Taken at the MCAS Miramar Airshow '05 in San Diego on October 12, 2005. For more images from the MCAS Miramar Airshow, click here. -------------------------------------------- The Rockwell (now Boeing) B-1B Lancer (aka The 'Bone') takes off from the Miramar field just before performing a tactical demonstration for the crowd. The B-1B, while very large and almost combersome looking for a modern day carpet bomber, is one of the faster bombers in the Air Force inventory. With it's unique swept wing design much like the F-14 Tomcat, it can reach Mach 1.2 at sea level (900+ mph). Able to fly at a cieling of 30,000 feet, often the B-1B is used in carpet bombing situations and where a couple of larger 'cluster bombs' will release hundreds of miniature explosive canisters can be unloaded on an infantry. It carries a crew of four and can fly intercontinentally without needed refueling. The B-1B has four Four General Electric F-101-GE-102 Turbofan Engines with full afterburners that can produce 30,000 pounds of thrust PER engine with afterburner lit! That's 120,000 pounds of thrust. So why is the B-1B commonly known as 'The Bone'? Well... It's a B One Bomber... put those together and you have BOne. It became much more well known and easier to say than B-1. Taken with a Canon Rebel XT EOS 350D (8mp) and Canon 100-400mm USM IS F4.5L Lens.

This is fantastic!!! I used to live down there and my offices were in the Golden Triangle at the end of the runway... Loved the sound of the planes flying overhead on their way out to run practice ops over the Pacific!!!
