Description

Taken at the 'Aviation Nation' Nellis Air Force Base Airshow, November 2005. For more warbird and aviation photos, click here. ------------------------------------------------ "The legend of the Thunderbird is an ancient myth that survives even to the present day in some Native American cultures. Though the Thunderbird myth varied from region to region and tribe to tribe, the Thunderbird was, in the eyes of the ancient Native Americans, a magical animal that was sent by their gods to protect them from the powers of evil. Riding on the wings of the storm, the Thunderbird embodied the power of the storm. Its eyes flashed fire, its cry was like the crack of lightning, and its mighty wings beat with the sound of rolling thunder, ever protecting its people from the powers of evil." I think that about covers this for once! :-) I will add that the Thunderbirds are the United States Air Force's premiere flight demonstration team that travels to airshows around the country. They fly the Lockheed F-16 Fighting Falcon (aka Viper). One fact that most people do not know, the USN Blue Angels and the USAF Thunderbirds never fly together at a public airshow due to rules issued by the department of defences (to maximize the promotional benefit they have for the military). BUT, one weekend each year, the two teams meet at Nellis Air Force Base and show off their new manuvers to eachother in a 'exchange of ideas' day. It's been said that this airshow, which really isn't a show other than for the base personnell, has the BEST performances of the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels. Taken with a Canon Rebel XT EOS 350D (8mp) with a Canon 100-400mm USM IS F4.5L Lens.
