Description

Some years ago, the streets of Buenos Aires were full of women like this. They were beggars. They alll told the same sad stories in the same broken Spanish, many of them were even barefoot in winter. After a while the news was that they were slaves working for some organization. The operation is like this: the organization takes them to some wealthy city (Buenos Aires was wealthy in the mid 90s, not now) from some asian or eastern european country. They bribe the authorities - something very easy in South America - and every woman has a corner assigned to beg. After several hours of working they are taken back to their houses were they live in deplorable conditions. It is obvious that they can't escape. In this case, because of their clothes and way of speaking it was said they were from Romania, as Romanian is similar to Spanish. Nowadays, after the economic crisis in Argentina, most of them have dissapeared, taken to other places. But as Buenos Aires is a city with lots of american and european tourists, there are some of them still around. The stories they tell are all fake but their sadness is 100% real.

Excellent photograph! You really captured the woman's feelings and the innocence of the child. Very well done!

You've captured well an expression of desperation, anger and profound sadness- all at once. A tragic commentary. Excellent work.

Seeing her face, and holding that small child. My heart breaks. This photo made me have to say something here because it hurts so much to see that the world is still so cruel; especially to the children.
