Description

It has been two and a half years since I posted an image of Stone Henge here on my doorstep a national treasure looked after by English Heritage and the National trust the land and area surrounding the stones. Visitors see today the remains of the final stage of Stonehenge, a prehistoric temple used as a place of worship and burial. In its first stage it was a large earthwork--"henge"--a bank and ditch enclosing the Aubrey holes (named after their 17th century discoverer) arranged in a circle. Later (around 2100 BC) 80 bluestones were brought from the Preseli mountains in Wales dragged and ferried on wooden rafts and arranged in a double circle in the center. Somewhat later sarsen stones from the Marlbourough Downs, were arranged in an outer circle with continuous lintels and five trilithons were arranged in a horseshoe, the axis of which pointed to the midsummer sunrise. The Heel Stone marked this axis and the original approach to the temple. Even later (1550 BC) the bluestones were rearranged in the horseshoe and circle. Taken at sunset a little grainey perhaps but I hope you like it. Thanks for taking time to look and any commments you care to make

It's incredible to see how they've achieved this result, both regarding mechanical and astronomical! Impressive work, Danny, a fine capture in a special mood! Excellent work! :)

It's lovely. You can't go wrong with this architectural wonder. I just wish I could go back in time and ask the builders of it exactly what it was all about! Excellent work.

A must-visit-sight for me. Planning on going there for a quickie if my UK-trip happens later this spring. Really beautiful and moody sky. And the grain only adds to that effect IMO. Have a great one! #:O)

I enjoyed reading about the petrified reindeer horns in the archaeological record. Only one dig per millenium is really a discovery though.

I live in the UK yet never visited. It always reminds me of a haunted place full of spirits but a kind of magic too I really cannot make my mind up whether it be haunted or magical maybe a bit of both lol! Great shot V Cathy xoxoxo

I like the "graininess", it adds to the mood that is rather appropriate for such a special place:-) I hope that next time I go past, I can capture something to this standard....
