The background photograph was originally taken in normal room light; it was converted in Photoshop to look like a darkened room with the only light coming from the terminal. The dark effect was created with a dark blue color and the paintbucket tool (parameter changed from 'normal' to 'multiply); the airbrush tool was used to create additional pools of darkness. The lighting effect was achieved by having the 'normal' version on a layer below the 'dark' version, and using the eraser tool (opacity set to 20%) to scrub away the dark at the places the terminal light would fall.
