Description

Vue5 I and PSP for the grasses around the water. I was screwing around with procedural terrains and I came up with this. You're not going to belive it, but the terrain texture is a single procedural material from the standard Vue material library called "Chipped with Paths". I have no idea in the world how it turned out this way. It seems that the procedural terrain I created somehow reacted with the material to form sand in some spots, dirt in others, and the rock-like material you see in the foreground. Go figure. Sorry abut the large size, but I just had to show the texture on this. If any one wants the terrain for this, you can download a zip file I created for it here: http://www.skinvue.net/downloads/DesertOasisTerrain.zip The whole zip file is only 300KB. I put two versions of the terrain inside so that you can see the effect of the key filter inside the procedural function. Basically, if you just play with the shape of the filter, it will adjust the micro-roughness of the terrain.

Don't you just love it when good things happen accidentally. This looks very realistic - well done!

Excellent work Dave...I like it. As for the the terrain changing. Changing materials on procedurals terrains always has this sort of effect. It has to do with the attributes of the new material, which has different blends -position, altitude, slope, orientation etc.

Thanks Vertecles. I just went back and checked and indeed the material is a mixed material that changes by slope and orientation. I still never would have guessed that the material would map itself like this. Thank goodness for happy accidents.

Love it. Especially the background areas, which have just the right amount of bright light and dusty haze.

This looks spectacular - probably the best 3D oasis I ever saw ! Terrain looks a little bit strange - but maybe you've discovered some "hidden vue feature" ? It is worth of investigating what happened - on first glance I have impression that you used a mixed function that produces smooth terrain on some parts and highly bumped on other. I have to check if I can get something simmilar. Excellent and Vote!

I decided to take out the ditch I had in the original version after my wife Victoria told me it looked like a trail of elephant droppings, or words to that effect. So its all sand now.
