Description

I was raised on a farm. When I was a young girl, we had a blackberry patch. Rows and rows of plants. It was wonderful! We would pick them, wash them, freeze some, some my mom used to make jelly and jam. She made the absolute best blackberry pie! When the plants were loaded down with berries, my grandmother would come help us all pick them. I was around 11 or 12 I think, the summer my grandmother got bit by the copperhead snake. She had reached in under some leaves to pick some berries and it struck and bit her between her index finger and middle finger. Forty years ago there wasn't a lot they could do with a snake bite in that area of the hand. My mom grabbed a leather belt, used it as a tourniquet on my granny's arm above the elbow, and off we went to the hospital. I remember being so afraid, thinking she would die. Dr LeHew said the only thing we could do was to keep the tourniquet on her arm, but release it for five minutes out of every hour, day and night until the venom worked through her body. There was no guarantee she would survive. It was a vigil of seemingly endless days and nights. She got terribly sick. Her arm swelled horribly and turned black. But she lived! After that incident, we used lengths of wood to move the leaves of the plants before we picked the berries from the underside of the bushes. Never did see another snake there. This flame started taking shape and made me think of that incident. I love a happy ending! Don't you? Apophysis 2.03c Postwork: The Usual Suspects Thanks for coming by and leaving comments. I definitely wouldn't want to get bitten by that. Looks dangerous. How frightening that must have been!! Excellent rendition of your story!!! :)

Your story changes the picture. I once found a nest of baby vipers. Strangely, I just knew they would be there. I also had to dispute the right to use a style with the odd sun-hogging creature in the early autumn. They really should learn manners! Cliff.
