Trying for the effect of one of those dramatic Victorian fantasy landscapes here, hence added noise and contrast-fiddling postwork

A couple of points: the graininess is deliberate (it's the added noise) so as to give a canvas-like effect, and the resolution was deliberately degraded (slight Gaussian blur) to make it look old & painted. The technique might need further exploration, however :)

Fantastic work - I agree that you've achieved a nice effect here. But it looks like this world/image is waiting for you to complete it in some way. If you decide to take it further, I'd be interested in seeing the results...
