Description
Another low-light capture from the Buddhist Winter Festival that took place this weekend in San Jose, California. Their Tuvan throat singing combined with the horns and cymbals produced the most rancorous cacophany that these old ears have heard in decades.

Rancorous cacophony, perhaps..but at the same time these chants have a strangely moving resonance. It's a sound that is totally alien to Western culture and yet fascinating all the same, no? This looks like a cheerful bunch of monks. Thanks so much for sharing this picture! :)

It's nice to view it in silence! Now, I like a good rancorous cacaphony as much as the next feller.... but those horns make my head throb sometimes. I give it "Excellent" because there's no selection for "Tubular!".

Sorry to imply that the throat singing was the major source of the cacophany. Those "instruments" were indescribably atonal and dissonant, played without recognizable rhythm or tempo. I recorded a 66MB movie of their music on my camera.

Hm, would the Swiss have learned it from them!? Wonderful work! :)
