"When one thinks of the Drow and the difficult, dark path they have taken, know that they have lost so much along the way, so much they are just now rediscovering. You know about Treallar, obviously, Lolth's, or rather, Mellikan's half-brother, who gained immortality at the same time she did but was locked away to prevent his interference with the growing worship of Lolth. But there were others. Selvatarm, the Drider God, you now know. Gorrenvelve, the Death Shadow, you have not yet met. Zhelvienne, the Night Stalker, the Cat of Many Tales, is little more than a forgotten story scribed on ancient ruins in the city of Zhellenthrorak. And there are others you will come to know. The Seldarine, the Mighty Gods of our surface kin are many, and those of the Drow are no less."

"But I follow the path of Sehanine, my child. She who would reunite us with our surface cousins, She who would see us play under the light of the sun in the Above World. Sehanine is unlike the other Gods of the Drow that you know, for she is not filled with hate or malice. She does not seek retribution for a crime that was never committed. We are taught that the Darthiir are to blame for our suffering, that they forced our ancestors beneath the ground in greed and arrogance. These lies have consumed our people and made the torments of Lolth bearable. But Sehanine has shown us the light. By the waxing of the great orb in the night sky in the Above World, She tells of the coming of a new time, a time when the horrors of the Bitch Queen will fade with Her last foul breath. Then we will see the sky once again. We will live in peace with our surface kin. The Love of Sehanine will guide the way."

Kethryn grew distracted. Vhaeren sat quietly watching her, wondering what miracles were whirling inside her mistress, longing to taste the love and freedom of which she spoke. Such things were new ideas, for there was no word in the language of the Splinter Kingdom for either. Kethryn looked down on her and smiled, and in her eyes Vhaeren could see another world. Her faith was that strong, and Vhaeren began to realize that not all Gods were monsters. Maybe not all believers were either.

"I have never seen the surface. Few have. The Yathrin tells lies of how the sun will burn you to death, how those on the surface writhe in a living death worse than the poisonous fogs of the Abyss. But I have faith. I have heard the word of Sehanine. That belief fills me with love and hope and erases the many years of lies so that my eyes can see. Believe in that beauty and love, my child. It may be hard to find. Many years may pass, and the path take you far from me, but the truth will not change. You will know your true purpose one day. This frightened little dobluth will blossom. You will even find beauty in the dragon that lies within your blood. Have faith child, and do not be afraid to love."
