Here is the port view schematic for the Romulan Bird of Prey, circa TOS. I wonder if the elaborate hull painting was done to enhance this mostly featureless ship. After all most of the ship done back then were not exactly detailed, although this seamed to be more then the usual

Perfectly done! I recall hearing that Gene Roddenberry wanted to keep costs down, but the ship had cool painting done onto it.
