Description

Aloha! Been hung up a little lately, had some minor surgery done. But am on the mend and should be back to full tilt in no time...till then will be a little slow in commenting as I can sit in front of the puter for short lengths of time. But hey, that won't stop me for long. I shot this pineapple blossom in my yard before the surgery so I would have something to play with till I can get out again...This is the flower of the pineapple that will mature into a full pineapple in a few months. If you chop the top off the pineapple as I did here and plant it in a pot of dirt you will get a mature pineapple in about 18 months. Of course it helps to live in a tropical climate, it grows poorly in colder climates. Here are some facts about the pineapple. There were 31,000 acres of pineapples grown in Hawaii in 2004. One third of the world's pineapple comes from Hawaii. You can grow your own pineapple plant by twisting the crown off a store bought pineapple, letting it dry for 2-3 days, then planting it. The pineapple is not a single fruit as generally assumed, but a cluster of 100-200 tiny fruitlets. It takes two years for a pineapple plant to produce, and each plant typically produces at most two pineapples in its life. The pineapple is originally native to Brazil and Paraguay. Sailors brought them to the West Indies long before the arrival of Europeans, although it was White merchants who first introduced it to Hawaii. Pineapples are the only edible members of the bromeliad family of plants. Of the hundreds of varieties of pineapples, Smooth Cayenne is by far the most prevalent. Three other varieties are gaining in popularity: Red Spanish pineapples have a tougher skin that make shipping easier; Sugar Loaf pineapples are very large and heavy; Golden Supreme pineapples have lower acid and more sweetness. Thanks for having a peek, and have a great rest of the week...Much Aloha to All!

Lovely shot Dave, ever thought of taking it straight down from the top.....I would think Macro wouldn't show to much but a wide angle lens might produce something nice :) Aloha!

HUH?????? HUUUUUH???? WHAT SURGERY???? Oh God, i hope youre doing okay. Perhaps it was just a small operation to insert some swede-implants or something, so that you too can withstand these winters of ours....might come in handy when you decide to swap homes with me. #;o) Seriously though, i hope its nothing too serious and that you ment quickly. Fantastic shot btw, of that sharp and spiky flower...that yet looks somewhat delicate. Have a wonderful day buddy, and feel better. #:O)

Hmmm!! I never knew all that stuff before now. Thanks for sharing it with us. My sister and I were at the store one time. She saw a blossom on a bromeliad and bent down to smell it. She got a wicked little poke on the tip of her nose that neither of us will forget. I only laughed after I found out she was OK. Hope you get better soon, dear!!! {{VOTE}}

Here's hoping you have a swift recovery, and that the surgery was minor. The photo is exquisite! The detail is awesome! Believe it or not we have 6 pineapple plants growing in our yard here in Central Florida with one in bloom now. The fruit from our plants tastes incredible.
