I have been drawing since I was 11, some 33 years ago.
My 6th grade teacher, Mr. Knoss, was a great artist and I greatly admired his illustrations. He encouraged me to pursue my artistic interests at a crucial time in my development.
My High School art teacher "Vern", was also a great influence. He always challenged me to try different things.
I was lucky that my parents were very supportive of my interest in art. I studied at The Minneapolis College of Art and Design (1986-1990). Where I was humbled by many great artists that were far more talented than I. There it was that I rounded out my fine art skills, and then chose to major in Media Arts. Studied film, video and sound. Learned all the skills needed to shoot, direct, edit those mediums.
While pursuing a Media Arts major, I discovered computer graphics, still in it's infancy. This is where I came to an Epiphany. Here was a new medium, that incorporated everything I had previously learned into one new medium. Not only that, but it had new dimensions, interactivity, feedback, randomness, AI. I was hooked.
The next 17 years I learned and grew with the industry. Learning everything from how to create and manipulate digital imagery and create animations, to interface design and interactive authoring. My day job is an Information Architect, a fancy term for software interface design.
A few years back, my wife and I hit on some difficult times (As many people do) and it was during a very dark time in our lives that I discovered what became Renderosity, Initially I posted work, merely as a way to get myself back into the discipline of making new art.
I was delighted to find a world-wide community of talented artists, exchanging ideas and art!! I was thrilled! I have learned so much from you, and your art has brightened up my world. I am lucky to have made some great friends here, and I aim to do tributes to all of you!

Huuummm..."Great Minds"?? :-) Eric...seems we are thinking at least somewhat in the same vein See my Bryce post on March 8th here, titled "VANISHING - GLOBAL WARMING". I live in the land of the disappearing ice and snow, and however you want to cut it...it's vanishing. The Arctic ice pack is shrinking and the Tundra is melting - I know, 'cause I lived on the Tundra in the early 60's. Regardless of the "cause"...we should take pains to not ADD to the situation. that's just common sense to anyone with a high school science education. :-))

Yeah I agree I think it's going to get worse before it gets worse in regards to mama earth. But we will change and bring it back. Humans are fast adapters and are capable of remarkable change in a short amount of time. In the meantime we have your fabulous image! Great work! :D

Well we all know what we humans have done to the earth. I guess my next question would be , what department is this guy in? It is a major issue and as you show here , this iceberg looks too close for comfort ! Your design shows just what we need to worry about really. Great work and something that all humans should not ignore !!~**~!!

You know what? I decided a long time ago that the debate over global warming is really academic. In the end, it doesn't matter if it's real or not. What matters is that spewing all those chemicals into the air certainly isn't a good thing. Even if it's not harming the atmosphere, it's harming us. So I personally think we should assume it's real and act accordingly. Err on the side of caution and all that. Although as far as climate warming, I'm not seeing it here in New England. This was the first year since the 80s that we didn't get clobbered with major snow. Did I mention I hate snow? lol. hugs V

I recently saw a documentary of a man who has been mapping the ice in the Artic or Antartic for thirty five years and he was terrified by the changes he has seen in the last few years. It seriously is time for man to turn to solar power and the power of the sea. I hate to see humans destroy the enviroment they live. Yes, there are natural cycles. The Cistercian monks used to grow grapes in 1200 where I lived in Scotland. But things seem to be speeding up.We are living in the submerged 7/8ths.

All I know is I've already got the AC on. Too bad the old Eric didn't surface...would have made for a more interesting story. ;] Love the image too, reminds me of that fake photo that made the internet rounds some time back. Thanks for the links!

SO, interesting thought for those who subscribe to evolutionary theory...it would appear that, if you so subscribe, man has evolved to a point where he is no longer controlled by the environment which spawned him. Thus, according to those who believe that should the global warming trend continue mankind is at risk of extinction, man has evolved beyond the capacity of evolution to keep the species alive. (While the dinosaurs could not evolve fast enough to escape the ice age, that was not "caused" by them while many believe man is "causing" global warming.) Should we thus conclude that our physical and reproductive capabilites have "out evolved" our brains? Perhaps glaobal warming is the arena in which we will find out. Cool pic by the way. The bottom bit looks a bit like a whale diving straight down :)

I know many have had something to say about the subject. I was going to add my concerns but instead will tell you that I had a good laugh about the situation and then cried that such blindness is around. No wonder we cannot stop it with individuals who are not concerned.

FWIW, I love the image and the thought behind it.
