Description

This image was created for a competition held at DesignBoom.com. The premise behind the competition was to create a cart that would replace the shopping carts homeless people often use to store their possessions in. Not only was the new design to provide storage but also shelter for its homeless occupant. The design above accommodates both of these needs in a compact and aesthetically pleasing package. The top most views show the cart in its closed and mobile state. In this mode the cart tilts back slightly and can be pushed around, the storage compartment is located at the bottom of the body to provide a low center of gravity giving it balance and stability as it travels, the two wheel design also gives it a high degree of maneuverability on crowded city streets. The middle view demonstrates how the cart is deployed into shelter mode. The front of the cart remains vertical while the back folds down allowing the handles to rest on the ground. As the back panel is lowered the storage compartment rises to the top of the structure making room for the occupant to lie across the bottom of the cart. The occupant would then lay down on the slightly reclined bed and fold down the tent like structure that was concealed between the back panel and the front compartment. The bottom views show the cart from the exterior in its fully deployed state with occupant inside. I would have liked to have spent a great deal more time modeling and articulating details as well as laying out the panels but due to an extremely limited time frame between design and completion this was as far as I was able to take this project. Comments and critques much appreciated, thanks!

I think this is an interesing idea, it might have a use in disaster relief also, when they could be delivered with emergency rations inside ? looks like something the Japanese would hand out after earthquakes ?

This comment will probably be taken wrong, but I mean it kindly. When I first looked at the illustration it reminded me of "Opus" in Gary Larsen's "The Far Side".
