Description

On Cateman III, the planet's single large continent covers a quarter of its surface, spreading from 10 degrees North, past the Equator, stretching down into the southern hemisphere to 40 degrees South. life is lonely and hard for most of its colonists. Although the air is breatheable, human habitation is barely sustainable. The continent's interior, the Wayback, is arrid and dry. Most settlements are along the coast, but individual stations scatter far into the Wayback. There are no cities; the biggest settlements are just large towns and most are mere villages. There are no railroads, no monorails, and roads are usually a rutted track winding through the wilderness. Coastal ships ply the coasts of the shallow ocean, but a number of larger towns lie several hundred kilometers inland. These and the smaller settlements are supplied with food, goods, and equipment and ship out their own products via LandRovers. These huge machines are the "tramp freighters" of the steppes. They also have some cabins for the occasional passenger or two, but most of those go empty. Between the larger interior settlements, three to five of the giant rigs may be connected into a land train with all their powerful engines running in tandom. Only a single LandRover runs a freighting route to the outlying small settlements. The arrival of a LandRover is a great event in the lives of the settlements; a bit like going to market, only the market comes to them. Usually, there is an aire of festivity and the crew are usually invited to stay overnight. Needless to say, the crew contribute quite a lot to the gene pool of the Wayback settlers. ************************************* I originally intended to use the LandRover in my Mars series; and you will likely see it again in some future picture about the Matronauts. It is not finished; I plan to add a railing and probably some cargo doors and a moveable crane on rails on top of the freight section. Credits: Other vehicles: Richard Jeferies. Buildings: "Landing Pad 1 by Richard Taylor; textures by Jonathan Allen. Rock formation: "Unique Rocks: Volume 1 by the hankster. Well done. good concept. Somehow I suspect the crews would be predominately female, for stiring the gene pool. Atmosphere appears to be earth norm = oxy/hydrogen & a G type solar system. I always have fun trying to estimate what an artist envisions.
