Description

Dryas julia (syn: Dryas iulia), also known as the Julia butterfly or Julia Heliconian, or Flame butterflu, this is a species of butterfly The sole representative of its genus, the Julia is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida, and in summer can sometimes be found as far north as eastern Nebraska. Its wingspan ranges from 82 to 92 mm, and it is colored orange (brighter in male specimens) with black markings. It feeds on the nectar of flowers including lantana and shepherd's needle, and its caterpillars form hosts in passion vines including Passiflora affinis in Texas. The Julia is a fast flier and frequents clearings, paths, and margins of forests and woodlands. Over 15 subspecies have been described. This is quite common for the heliconius species to hybridise in this manner.. It is quite a favourite species of mine as it was of my dear friend Giancalo Lucerni so for you Nathalie and Ilona who love them so much.. Thanks for taking time to look and comment if you like
