Description

Not as glamorous an airplane (or photo) as "Mustang Morning." However the lesser known planes of WWII also have their place. The Vought OS2U "Kingfisher" was launched from catapults on US Navy battleships and cruisers. They were versatile planes for scouting, directing naval gunfire, antisubmarine patrols, and search & rescue. This example is on the battleship USS Alabama moored at Mobile, Alabama.

These were not as "sexy" as the fighters, but did the job, and did it well. Before there was Radar, this how the Navy was able to "look over the horizon" to acomplish the mission. Great Photo. Thanks!

Great capture Mike. I don't remember seeing it when we were there in October 1992!
