Description

Here in Swindon where I now live was once the centre for the building of many great Steam trains and coaches the Town grew around this industry This is an image of the Bristolian a Castle Class steam Train on display in her home. The formation of the train was of seven coaches totalling 220 tons. Initially, a 'King' class locomotive was employed on the 'Bristolian', but within a short time, the 'Castle' class were found to be more suitable. The service was suspended at the beginning of the Second World War and was finally restored in 1954, again with the use of 'Kings' later to be replaced by the 'Castles'. By this time, the 'Castle' class had been modified with regard to their steaming capabilities, and maximum speeds of 100 mph were not unknown. At the end of steam, several trains were known to complete the journey in under 94 minutes at an average speed of 75.2 mph.

Kort she was Ex-L.N.E.R. A3 class 4-6-2, Never as far as I know came down on this line which was the G.W.R. All of these 4 main lines were run with great pride a far cry from the poor railways we have here now

Ah, a beautiful nostalgic shot of the gleaming paint and polished brass. Have travelled a lot on some historical steam trains in India and I understand the romance attached to it. Great shot!
