Description

If you've ever noticed the holes in the ground that look like large ant holes, these are what live in them! These are called Mining Bees (Andrenidae species) and the females make burrows, and inside the burrows they make individual cells padded with pollen onto which they will they their eggs. When the larva hatch and grow into adults through summer they overwinter as adults and emerge in spring (from what i've read). This one would duck back into the hole whenever I went to compose the shot, but after a few seconds would pop back out. While not a technically difficult shot to take, finding one of these burrows can be difficult itself, let alone one that's occupied. Something i've always wanted to get a photo of so I'm quite happy with this little personal achievement of mine ;) Taken with the MP-E at between 1 and 2x (no need to go much bigger with a large subject) This is the same bee as in the other photo in my gallery on the leaf with the close-up headshot. I have a full "body shot" ;) that i'll be posting. Thanks for viewing and btw - thanks especially for all of your wonderful comments

Great work finding him - and an impressive macro as he pokes his head over the edge. Excellent work!
