Description
Simone stands outside Katerina's tower, her mind a tangled web of nightmarish memories, permanently trapped in the moment of her parents' gruesome murder at the hands of Savuk's troops. Her eyes stare listlessly into the vast emptiness of the Sarodor wasteland.
The Wasteland is empty. Everything is empty. My hand is empty.
A soft moan escapes her lips. She studies the southern horizon, feeling no emotion but pain.
So much nothing. There is nothing here for me. There is nothing in my life. There is nothing in my hand.
Suddenly the pain becomes all too real. Overwhelming. She winces. A tear rolls down her cheek.
My wrist hurts.
She looks down, almost absent-mindedly. Her tortured, blackened mind barely registers the carving knife in her hand. Blood runs freely from three large gashes in her left forearm. The sand between her feet is choked with blood.
Blood on the ground. Blood under the ground. My blood.
A light switches on inside her mind. Her body starts to shake. Her mind heaves and convulses inside her head, suddenly reminded of the current state of the world; of the peril of those she loves.
And then, for the first time in months, Simone speaks.
"My sisters."
She lowers her head. She grits her teeth in a snarl of furious determination. "Save them."

Notes:
This is my first Carrara render. First impressions about this software are that the terrain generation and shading tools are far superior to Vue's, but the UI is slower and far from intuitive.
This image needed quite a bit of postwork to remove dozens of black "smudges" caused by Carrara's rendering engine incorrectly calculating indirect lighting through Simone's semi-transparent dress. I spent a few days experimenting, but haven't been able to find an automated solution to this problem yet.

This is absolutely wonderful! I love the background, the expression, the character--top notch work!

The background mountains are fantastic! Wonderful DOF effect. One thing looks a little strange: the sharp shadow line on the left side of her neck (her left). Awesome work on her expression, and the windblown hair is top notch too. Love the chapter - I hope Simone can find a way to help her sisters. For a first Carrara work this is downright excellent.
