Description

Mistle thrush Turdus viscivorus A mistle thrush may be mistaken for a song thrush, but is larger also slightly more grey and paler colouring and a longer tail. It has a paler, grey-brown back and a creamy-buff breast with rounder black-brown spots (song thrushes have browner, V-shaped spots aligned in rows). The mistle thrush has more streaked wings, pale sides to the tail and white (not bright buff) underwings. Mistle thrushes have been widespread and common throughout Britain, their numbers had been in decline but recently getting back to the former numbers. You can often see, and hear, males singing from a prominent tree branch or roof-top, but will see them less often on the ground on small lawns (it prefers larger gardens, parks and sports pitches). It is not generally a gregarious bird, but does form small flocks occasionally. Mistle thrushes build a cup-shaped nest in the fork of a tree, and females lay four or five eggs between March and May. Awesome photography!! I have never seen better!!! We have a mistle thrush nest on our shed in the back lane. Low down in a thorn bush. They brought up two broods last year! It was a joy to quietly watch them, from a distance, not to disturb the chicks....Happy Easter, Danny.
