Description

A bit of a mystery at first as I was informed this was called the Blue Buzzard which if so I had never heard of it before, and in any case had not got one in my collection of Birds of prey, but I think this is in fact the Long legged Buzzard, is therefore a scarce winter visitor, usually to the east coast. Numbers vary from year to year, from almost none in a poor year and up to 250 in exceptional ones. Takes over from Common Buzzard as the most conspicuous bird of prey above the tree-line in Scandinavia. Numbers vary enormously from year to year but if there are plenty of lemmings, then places such as Karigasniemi in Finland and Abisko in Sweden can support dozens of Rough-legs. In winter, their numbers are even more unpredictable but they can occur anywhere in central Europe from Britain to the Balkans. One of the best areas for wintering Rough-legs is the Hortobagy plain in Hungary. Thanks for taking time to view and for any comments you care to make..
