Description

More History with Wholehog Because "Rodinia" was received quite well (thank you, thank you) I've decided to hold another class about the early development of the earth we live on. This time we're going back to Pre-Rodinia :o) Sherman, set the WayBack Machine for the Archaean Eon....Brrrrr!WoopWoop!Clink!Clunk! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Welcome to... The Early Archaean This period defines the oldest known rocks on earth. 3.8 to 2.5 Billion Years Ago Shortly before the earliest part of the Archaean Eon a vast ocean covered the entire globe. Portions of the earths mantle began to melt forming magma which vented upwards through sub-oceanic "Shield Volcanoes" forming the first continental plates. As these early plates grew in size they began to shift and colide violently with one another creating the first "Convergent Margins" and "Subduction Zones". It is from these Subduction Zones that came the first large, classic, cone-shaped volcanoes called "Stratovolcanoes", such as Mt. St. Helens in Washington State, or Mt. Shasta in California. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So endeth todays history lesson :) Enjoy "The Early Archaean" ~~~~~~~~~~~ Coming soon - "The Late Archaean - When Life Began"
