Description
AloooooooHa!
Sorry I haven't been around for a bit, work commitments, and life in general has been taking first priority lately. I'm sure we all have to deal with real life once in awhile and actually put the camera down for a bit...Nooooooooo! I started to Jones a little so picked it up and headed for our annual Hula show in my hometown of Hilo.
In this series I wanted to focus on the different ethnic groups that make up a hula school or "Halau" as it is known in Hawaii. Hawaii has always been a melting pot of ethnic races and mixed blood. The blending of these different races produce some truly unique and beautiful people. It doesn't matter what race you are, if you love to dance and respect the Hawaiian culture you may join a hula hala'u. I will be trying to show you the many mixed races that make up a hula troop, and you will see what I see.
Here are some facts about our annual Merry Monarch Festival.
Merrie Monarch Festival
Hilo, Hawaii hosts the world's premier hula competition
In Hawaii, the week after Easter is when hula halau from the islands of Hawaii and the mainland gather in Hilo on the Big Island for the Merrie Monarch Festival.
The Merrie Monarch Festival began in 1964 and has evolved into what is now universally considered to be the world's most prestigious hula competition.
The festival is named in honor of King David Kalakaua, the last king of the Hawaiian islands, whose coronation in 1883 included public displays of hula, which had long been buried under rules imposed by Hawaiian missionaries.
Kalakaua ruled for seventeen years. His reign was marked by a resurgence in Hawaiian culture, music and included numerous public performances of hula. Because of his love of dance and music, Kalakaua was nicknamed, "the Merrie Monarch." In his memory and in celebration of Hawaiian culture, dance and music, the Merrie Monarch Festival is held each year.
The annual competition extends over three nights. On Thursday evening, the Miss Aloha Hula competition is held. This is a solo competition for females where each dancer performs both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula `auana (modern hula).
The Friday and Saturday competitions are for the hula halau (hula schools). Friday evening marks the hula kahiko competition. Saturday features the hula `auana as well as the awards ceremony.
Thanks for dropping in and I hope you enjoy this series. Aloha~

That way you can document every aspect of your fascinating and wonderful country. Beautiful work my friend. Very dramatic shot. Love how she looks and how her hair blows around like that. What an exotic beauty! Great shot. I'm a bit confused by the name "Merry (Merrie) Monarch Festival" though. There are lots of letters in that that aren't in the Hawaiian alphabet. I would have thought that such a celebration would have a more traditional Hawaiian name to it.

Nani na wahine o Hawaii i keia Hula Halau. Beautiful are the woman of Hawaii in this Hula Group. To Acadia, At one time, instruments as well as the Hawaiian language was banned from all spheres of life. King David Kalakaua revived the instruments as well as festivals. The festival was named after the "Nick Name" to King David Laamea Kamanakapuu Mahinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalakaua......."Merrie Monarch." Imagine trying to name the festival "King David Laamea Kamanakapuu Mahinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalakaua Festival." Much easier Merrie Monarch and its been with us since 1964. Happy Merrie Monarch Festival week my friend. Aloha
