Description

In the late 1930's, many able-bodied Germans were taken (willingly or otherwise) from their chosen professions to support the build-up of forces leading to what would later be known as World War II. Musicians were no exception to this, resulting in a shortage of talent to play in the popular jazz cabarets, especially in and around Berlin. One enterprising cabaret owner, Otto Blasinbieger, developed a unique solution to the problem, constructing the first "Hupenklang" from the abandoned instruments in his club. Later called the trumpetrombohorn after its import into America, it allowed a single person to play, in effect, three brass instruments at once. Otto was able to keep his club filled long after his neighbors on the Tutenstrasse had closed their doors. With the end of World War II a few years later, the trumpetrombohorn fell out of favor, and is now seen (and heard) in a few rare concerts by a small handful of particularly dexterous musicians. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This bit of musical whimsy was entirely modelled, textured and rendered in Cinema 4D XL 9.5, using global illumination with an HDR image as the environment, plus a single spotlight for highlights and shadows. The full size render took just over 5 hours and 15 minutes to complete. Enjoy!
